This patch will apply against the 2.6.39 kernel built from the OE-
development tree (Which is essentially
the v2.6.39 from the main tree with OE patches for BeagleBoard support and
a few other features)

If you have the Leapord imaging camera board with this particular sensor,
I would apprecite it if anyone could
try this patch out and provide any feedback/test results.

To get the complete tree which works on a BeagleBoard-xM with all the OE
patches and this patch,
you can clone: https://github.com/joelagnel/linux-omap-2.6/tree/oedev-
2.6.39-mt9v113

It will compile and work on a BeagleBoard-xM with the defconfig at:
http://cgit.openembedded.org/cgit.cgi/openembedded/tree/recipes/linux/linu
x-omap-2.6.39/beagleboard/defconfig

Also you will need to apply my media-ctl patch (or clone the tree) to
setup the formats:
https://github.com/joelagnel/media-
ctl/commit/cdf24d1249ac1ff3cd6f70ad80c3b76ac28ba0d5

Binaries for quick testing on a BeagleBoard-xM:
U-boot: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/u-boot.bin
U-boot: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/MLO
uEnv.txt: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/uEnv.txt
media-ctl: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/media-ctl
kernel: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/uImage

media-ctl/yavta commands you could use to get it to show a picture can be
found at:
http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/stream.sh

Note:
The BeagleBoard camera board file in this patch replaces the old one, so
this will take away support for the 5M
sensor (mt9p031), I hope this can be forgiven considering this is an
RFC :). I am working on a common board file
that will work for both sensors.

[Hiremath, Vaibhav] Joel,

I am bit surprised by this patch submission, first of all, the patch has been submitted without my knowledge. And I was not aware that you are targeting linux-media for this code-snippet.

This code needs lot of cleanup and changes to get to the level where we can submit it to the linux-media, and I think I clearly mentioned about known issues with this patch/driver in the commit itself. Please refer to the below commit -

http://arago-project.org/git/projects/?p=linux-omap3.git;a=commitdiff;h=c6174e0658b9aaa8f7a3ec9fe562619084d34f59

I agree that we had some internal discussion on this and I was under assumption that this effort was only towards beagle openembedded and not for linux-media.

I also agree with the fact that, due to other critical issues I could not able to spend time on this and upstream it. But as I mentioned to you in one of private discussion, now we are working to get all this patches upstream and soon you will see patches coming in from my team.

Another important side note, you should always retain original authorship of the patches/commits/signoffs. It should always be in incremental order from baseline, which you are using.

Thanks,
Vaibhav

[Hiremath, Vaibhav] Joel,

I am bit surprised by this patch submission, first of all, the patch
has been submitted without my knowledge. And I was not aware that you
are targeting linux-media for this code-snippet.

This is an RFC, not a patch submission.

This code needs lot of cleanup and changes to get to the level where we
can submit it to the linux-media, and I think I clearly mentioned about
known issues with this patch/driver in the commit itself. Please refer
to the below commit -

http://arago-project.org/git/projects/?p=linux-
omap3.git;a=commitdiff;h=c6174e0658b9aaa8f7a3ec9fe562619084d34f59

I agree that we had some internal discussion on this and I was under
assumption that this effort was only towards beagle openembedded and
not for linux-media.

This is just an attempt to try to help clean it up. I think the patch for an older version of the kernel was already public. This isn't intended to be placed on the linux-media git tree. Many of the interested developers, however, may be on that list--and the code eventually needs to be made ready for inclusion on that git tree. Again, this is an RFC, not a patch submission.

I also agree with the fact that, due to other critical issues I could
not able to spend time on this and upstream it. But as I mentioned to
you in one of private discussion, now we are working to get all this
patches upstream and soon you will see patches coming in from my team.

I was not aware this was in conflict. That seems like exactly the reason we should be discussing this on the open external list--to avoid developers working redundantly on cleaning up patches for upstream.

Another important side note, you should always retain original
authorship of the patches/commits/signoffs. It should always be in
incremental order from baseline, which you are using.

Very good point. If this was not done properly, it seriously needs to be corrected. Thanks for that valuable review comment on what is essentially code you authored, by my understanding.

I do see your name in the copyright comments below. Where else is it missing?

Again, this was not submitted for inclusion into upstream trees--so I believe it is appropriate to get these corrections via the e-mail chain.

Hi Joel,

* Adds support for mt9v113 sensor by borrowing heavily from PSP 2.6.37
kernel patches * Adapted to changes in v4l2 framework and ISP driver

Here are a few comments about the code. I've left political issues aside on
purpose.

Subject: [beagleboard] [RFC v1] mt9v113: VGA camera sensor driver and
support for BeagleBoard

* Adds support for mt9v113 sensor by borrowing heavily from PSP 2.6.37
kernel patches
* Adapted to changes in v4l2 framework and ISP driver

This patch will apply against the 2.6.39 kernel built from the OE-
development tree (Which is essentially
the v2.6.39 from the main tree with OE patches for BeagleBoard support and
a few other features)

If you have the Leapord imaging camera board with this particular sensor,
I would apprecite it if anyone could
try this patch out and provide any feedback/test results.

To get the complete tree which works on a BeagleBoard-xM with all the OE
patches and this patch,
you can clone: https://github.com/joelagnel/linux-omap-2.6/tree/oedev-
2.6.39-mt9v113

It will compile and work on a BeagleBoard-xM with the defconfig at:
http://cgit.openembedded.org/cgit.cgi/openembedded/tree/recipes/linux/linu
x-omap-2.6.39/beagleboard/defconfig

Also you will need to apply my media-ctl patch (or clone the tree) to
setup the formats:
https://github.com/joelagnel/media-
ctl/commit/cdf24d1249ac1ff3cd6f70ad80c3b76ac28ba0d5

Binaries for quick testing on a BeagleBoard-xM:
U-boot: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/u-boot.bin
U-boot: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/MLO
uEnv.txt: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/uEnv.txt
media-ctl: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/media-ctl
kernel: http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/uImage

media-ctl/yavta commands you could use to get it to show a picture can be
found at:
http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/stream.sh

Note:
The BeagleBoard camera board file in this patch replaces the old one, so
this will take away support for the 5M
sensor (mt9p031), I hope this can be forgiven considering this is an
RFC :). I am working on a common board file
that will work for both sensors.

[Hiremath, Vaibhav] Joel,

I am bit surprised by this patch submission, first of all, the patch has been submitted without my knowledge. And I was not aware that you are targeting linux-media for this code-snippet.

This code needs lot of cleanup and changes to get to the level where we can submit it to the linux-media, and I think I clearly mentioned about known issues with this patch/driver in the commit itself. Please refer to the below commit -

http://arago-project.org/git/projects/?p=linux-omap3.git;a=commitdiff;h=c6174e0658b9aaa8f7a3ec9fe562619084d34f59

I agree that we had some internal discussion on this and I was under assumption that this effort was only towards beagle openembedded and not for linux-media.

[Joel]

I'm sorry, actually the intent of the RFC was to get immediate VGA
camera support to Beagle users and some testing with our kernel. The
other intention was to help your team with the differences in what has
changed across the kernels as a reference so that you reuse some of
the work. Certainly I was not going to claim authorship or make the
final submission.

About Signed-off-by lines (if that's what you refer to about
authorship), I intentionally didn't include it in my temporary git
tree as I wanted to make sure if I could use it without permission. My
intention was to rebase and include the relevant SOB lines after I got
clarification on this. Could you suggest a general rule about SOB
lines and whether these can be used without permission when you
reuse/adapt a patch?

I hoped that the words "borrowed from PSP" in the commit summary, the
relevant links to the commits in your tree in the commit summaries and
the retaining of copyright information in the code made it clear that
I was not the original author.

I understand that it is a bit frustrating to see someone take your
code when its not yet complete, anyway I hope my commits help in some
way. Atleast there might be a few people who test your code on the
Beagle and give your team some valuable feedback.

Thanks,
Joel

Here are a few comments about the code. I've left political issues aside
on
purpose.

[Hiremath, Vaibhav] As always thanks for your comments.

Laurent,
But here the question is nowhere related to politics. I do not care about authorship at all; this is completely engineering argument/discussion I have with this patch.

I have been working with community since long time now, so I was not in favor of submitting this patch with so many known issues (from both feature and cleanliness). If you look at all the comments you provided, most of them should have been already part of the patch series. I wanted them to fix before submitting it to the linux-media, it doesn't matter whether it's RFC.

Another point FYI, the sensor driver has been written during 2.6.37 timeframe, where media-controller was still under flux. Since I wanted to make our production release with MC framework, I pulled in patches from your private branch and started developing from there, so definitely there will be various issues with the driver Vs the current mainline status.

If I would have been aware that, somebody is willing to push my patches, I could have helped him or worked with him (that will ease my bandwidth).

I just made my stand clear here, and I think we should park this discussion here now. We talked enough on this, and I believe we all understand this.

Thanks,
Vaibhav

I'm sorry, actually the intent of the RFC was to get immediate VGA
camera support to Beagle users and some testing with our kernel.

[Hiremath, Vaibhav] If you had posted this to beagle list alone, I wouldn't had any issues and that's what I was expecting when we discussed internally.

For me beagle list is custom list and for beagle developers on their kernel version (like 2.6.39 here).

The
other intention was to help your team with the differences in what has
changed across the kernels as a reference so that you reuse some of
the work. Certainly I was not going to claim authorship or make the

[Hiremath, Vaibhav] Joel,

I have issues with the technical contents of the patch itself, so if you would have submitted patch with my knowledge, I would have helped you atleast in review before submitting (that would have saved us from this noise).

Thanks,
Vaibhav

I totally agree with you on this. That's why I haven't done any in-depth
review of the patch, but just quickly looked through it.

Joel,

I gave this a try this weekend. I ran into a few problems/questions.

I wanted to try with pre-built (tested?) binaries so I grabbed yours
(used your uImage):
1. media-ctl binary does not work because there is no libmediactl.so
on my Angstrom root FS.
2. There was no yavta-nc application.

I googled and found Laurent's git.ideasonboard.org site and cloned the
media-ctl and yavta projects and built those.

1. The second media-ctl invocation in streams.sh fails with "error
parsing format".
2. The yavta app fails trying to do a "stream on" (maybe due to
media-ctl failure)?

Mark

have you tried 'opkg update ; opkg install mediactl yavta-nc' ?

Dear Mark,

Thanks for trying this out.

media-ctl/yavta commands you could use to get it to show a picture can be found at:
http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/stream.sh

You could install the packages Koen mentioned and then use my
media-ctl binary, that would make sure you have all the library
dependencies.

You could also try copying my libmediactl.so from [1] to /usr/lib/ and
run 'ldconfig', but that would be sort of a hack

Thanks,
Joel

[1] http://www.utdallas.edu/~jaf090020/libmediactl.so.0

Yes and no. I tried finding the mediactl package but failed because it
is actually
called media-ctl. Poor searching/naming skills. Thanks for the help. I
will try again tonight.

Mark

Showing my Angstrom ignorance here, but I cannot get these packages
via opkg update. I use Narcissus builder - I built a new FS yesterday
using 2011.03 - should I have used "next". It runs fine, but when I do
the opkg update; opkg install yavta-nc it fails. I see media-ctl and
yavta-nc in the package browser website, but my guess is they are for
"newer" builds?

What is the failure? If you have some output, could you paste it?

As a last resort, you could download the .ipk from Angstrom Package
browser, and uncompress it to get yavta-nc

Thanks,
Joel

The error is what you would expect: "package not found"

I did try downloading the .ipk, but it fails to install because "libc6
is too old". If I try to update libc6, it says it is already the
latest. This is the point about being on an old release (2011.03 vs
next).

Mark

(I trimmed the list as most of this probably is of little interest to
many others)

Ok, so I generated a new FS using "next" and installed media-ctl and
yavta-nc via opkg. This left me with the same results as when I built
the test apps myself. Anyway, here's the output:

Do I need a new .so as well:

root@beagleboard:~# wget http://utdallas.edu/~joel.fernandes/media-ctl

root@beagleboard:~# chmod +x ./media-ctl

You should rename the media-ctl.1 from wget to media-ctl

Thanks,
Joel
