I have an application that does not cooperate with any distribution beyond Jessie (Debian 8). But, none of the older ioT images I’ve tried appear to work on a new BBB Wireless. The unit is just fine when running the OS it shipped with from internal mmc, so probably not a hardware issue. For example, I use Etcher to write bone-debian-8.6-iot-armhf-2016-11-06-4gb.img.xz to an SD card and insert it into the holder. First issue is that - despite what I’ve read - the BBB refuses to boot the SD unless I hold down S2 at powerup. After a bit of activity, my Linux desktop shows the USB interface as active, but fails to assign an IP address. Similarly, a scan from my Macbook fails to show the built-in access point. I tried a slightly newer version (8.7), but that will not even boot. What am I missing here?
