I can boot Ubuntu on the BeagleBoard xM by following these instructions, including the bug fix to enable DVI output:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/OMAPMaverickInstall
But after entering the startup info (keyboard type, user name, etc.), if I shut down, then power down and power back up, the display is blank.
Restarting without powering down works OK.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Or not experiencing it? Suggestions?

In case anyone else encounters this, I adding serial logging as described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/BeagleEditBootscr
and with no other changes, I can now power down and reboot without problem.

I found a fix, but no logical explanation for it. I would be interested to know if it works for you:
