3.8.13 - Unable to flash Beaglebone Black Rev C with SD card

Good morning,

We have a project in which we have been using a very old kernel 3.8.13-bone84 for the past 6+ years.
We have purchased a couple of BBBs and we are attempting to flash them from an SD card, but the flashing process fails. We have successfully used this image on several BBBs (1000+) for more than 6 years without any issues. What is strange is that the flashing process fails only on 15 out of 100 new BBBs. Furthermore, if we disable the flash process, booting from the SD card also fails. The strange part is that if we use any newer image, the process works flawlessly, and the BBBs can be programmed.
We have also tried several SD cards (Brand New/OLD/8GB/16GB )without success. Here is the log from the boot:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

Workaround was found in another topic: 3.8.13 - Cannot flash Beaglebone Black

To clarify further, for the first workaround, we utilized a u-boot version with ums support enabled.

For the second workaround, we cloned the factory programmed image onto an SD card and disabled the eMMC flasher. We then used this cloned SD card to boot the BBB. Subsequently, we mounted a USB flash drive containing our golden image and used the ‘dd’ command to push the image onto the eMMC.

@GaOlSt Thanks for the support !

it would be greatly appreciated if you can elaborate your solution step by step. I believe I am having the same issue and I have been struggling for a month until I came across this post.

My BBB came with 3.8.13-bone79 and it can boot up with any latest images. However, I can no longer roll back to 3.8.13-bone79 after I flashed the emmc with new (actually I tried all, for instance,
am335x-debian-12.2-iot-armhf-2023-10-07-4gb, bone-debian-8.3-lxqt-4gb-armhf-2016-01-24-4gb ) images post 3.8.13-bone79. Even I tried to push various version of u-boot to emmc with dd per another @RobertCNelson’s post, still can’t roll back to 3.8.13-bone79.

I have read this post several times 3.8.13 - Cannot flash Beaglebone Black - #13 by athankok. I am new to Linux and BBB, so I didn’t get what exactly you resolved the problem.

Here is the serial output.

Please remote ‘quiet’ from your boot args (/boot/uEnv.txt) then we can see what’s happening with mmc…

There was no software solution since this was hardware issue.Even when we managed to download a newer version the sd card is not recognised. The sd slot was not properly soldered .mmc0_cd was not properly soldered this pin is near the hdmi port . This was found on about 10% of the BBB bought on the last six months .We just soldered the mmc0_cd pin and all our issues are gone. As far as i know from messages with the other user of the post he had the same issue and solved it with the same method.

May i ask if some versions of the drivers ignore the mmc_cd ? Because some images can boot even when the mmc_cd is not properly soldered .(we confirmed that is not soldered with the multimeter)

There is a broken-cd flag in the device-tree… mmc-controller.yaml « mmc « bindings « devicetree « Documentation - kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git - Linux kernel source tree

Here is some update:
Even though I did’t understand what you meant by updating emmc with dd, however I followed your comment “ums 0 mmc 1”,
now I was able to use etcher in Windows to program the emmc (is mapped as USB in Windows) in BBB with 3.8.13-bone79.
However, the same problem is still here: boot up 3.8.13-bone79 from both emmc or SD.

Again here is the serial output with 3.8.13-bone79 in the emmc.

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

@athankok “…There was no software solution since this was hardware issue.Even when we managed to download a newer version the sd card is not recognised…”

I see. I guess my problem is more software related that I had no problem at all before when I bought BBB w/ emmc came with 3.8.13-bone79 that BBB can boot up without SD or with SD card with any debian image newer than 3.8.13-bone79 (bone-debian-7.9-lxde-4gb-armhf-2015-11-12-4gb). Once I updated the emmc with bone-debian-8.3-lxqt-4gb-armhf-2016-01-24-4gb (same result with any other images newer than 3.8.13-bone79), then BBB can’t boot up with SD with 3.8.13-bone79 but can still boot up with SD with any image newer than 3.8.13-bone79. Now I can’t roll emmc back to 3.8.13-bone79. I tried to update emmc bootram with various versions of u-boot, the exact same problem remains.

Yeap, this is 3.8.13 first mmcblk up get’s node 0… Since you don’t have a microSD plugged in, the eMMC get’s 0…

Change root=/dev/mmcblk1p2root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 in your bootargs

I built that version of u-boot almost 9 years ago… let’s see if had a override for mmc value…

Here’s the patch used: Bootloader-Builder/patches/v2015.10/0001-am335x_evm-uEnv.txt-bootz-n-fixes.patch at master · RobertCNelson/Bootloader-Builder · GitHub

Bingo, i did back then…Here’s our entry point: Bootloader-Builder/patches/v2015.10/0001-am335x_evm-uEnv.txt-bootz-n-fixes.patch at master · RobertCNelson/Bootloader-Builder · GitHub

uenv_root=/dev/mmcblk0p2

(remember to update /etc/fstab to /dev/mmcblk0 from /dev/mmcblk1)

Change root=/dev/mmcblk1p2root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 in your bootargs…"

As matter of fact, after I read your such comments in other posts, in last few days, I have been trying to change it to root=/dev/mmcblk0p2, or root=/dev/mmcblk0p1, or root=/dev/mmcblk1p1, or root=/dev/mmcblk1p2, but I always ended up with /dev/mmcblk1p1 or ev/mmcblk1p2 if it was emmc only and SD was not present, or /dev/mmcblk0p1 or ev/mmcblk0p2 if SD was present. Here is what I just did :

#************here is /etc/fstab in mmcblk1p2 in emmc
/dev/mmcblk0p2 / ext4 noatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1

Here is the u-boot command output
If SD was present,
=> mmc list
OMAP SD/MMC: 0 (SD)
OMAP SD/MMC: 1 (eMMC)

if emmc only
=> mmc dev 0
Card did not respond to voltage select!
=> mmc dev 1
switch to partitions #0, OK
mmc1(part 0) is current device
=> mmc list
OMAP SD/MMC: 0
OMAP SD/MMC: 1 (eMMC)

That was why I guess, I can only change mmcblkxp to 1 or 2 by uEnv.txt and fstab, but emmc always took 1, and SD always took 0.

u-boot always had the number hardcoded, the patch for linux didn’t hit till sometime around v4.5.x so a few years later…

So that’s where this came from:

Checking if uenvcmd is set ...
gpio: pin 56 (gpio 56) value is 1
Running uenvcmd ...
Card did not respond to voltage select!
** Bad device mmc 0 **
debug: [/boot/vmlinuz-] ...

looks like the variable ${uname_r} did not translate… just hardcode it… as 3.8.13-bone79 in your /uEnv.txt script

and change load mmc 0:2load mmc 1:2… in /uEnv.txt

Regards,

“… change load mmc 0:2load mmc 1:2 … in /uEnv.txt”

It was one of many things I tried to in order to get mmcblk0p1 or p2, but always ended up with same result, which made me feel it was specified somewhere else or set on the fly.

Here is the serial output, I hope it won’t be too long for you to review. Appreciate your time on this very much:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

Okay, let’s split this into two parts, as you haven’t tried the change i mentioned…

/uEnv.txt

Loaded environment from uEnv.txt
Importing environment from mmc ...
Checking if uenvcmd is set ...
gpio: pin 56 (gpio 56) value is 1
Running uenvcmd ...

Bad Linux ARM zImage magic!

So in /uEnv.txt change all ${uname_r} variables to a hard-coded 3.8.13-bone79 then that section might go thru…

that’ll change all these:

debug: [/boot/vmlinuz-] ...

to:

debug: [/boot/vmlinuz-3.8.13-bone79] ...

And all load mmc 0:2load mmc 1:2 … in /uEnv.txt

Which will remove ** Bad device mmc 0 **

I have a variable you can set in /boot/uEnv.txt to overide root=/dev/mmcblk1p2 that is: uenv_root=/dev/mmcblk0p2

So please make either of those changes, /uEnv.txt or /boot/uEnv.txt or both…

Regards,

I made the following changes to ./uEnv.txt:
load mmc 0:2 to load mmc 1:2
uname_r=3.8.13-bone79

Then I added uenv_root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 to both ./uEnv.txt and ./boot/uEnv.txt. I guess this did the trick, now I can boot 3.8.13-bone79 from emmc. Here is the output (the format middle portion is a little bit messy):

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/mmcblk0p2 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

that mmc device is slowly die-ing, you could try a fresh format…

Regards

this looks good, see how it’s only using /uEnv.txt (so /boot/uEnv.txt is ignored)

Regards,

Was that the root cause that /dev/mmcblk0p2 could not be set, instead, it always ended with /dev/mmcblk1p2 or /dev/mmcblk1p1, no matter how it was specified in uEnv.txt? What was happening behind?

What did you mean “a fresh format” specifier, in uEnv.txt?

Was the fact that 3.8.13-bone79 on SD was still not able to boot up related to your comments on other post that older bones were using uuid mechanism to detect SD, which later on was changed in newer BBB Debian releases?
