Is there a way to copy from the eMMC to the SD card for making a restore image?

sorry for the slow response,
short answer is no
however @Kilian was able to get a buildroot image to work on the sdcard. I was able to verify that it works
read through the following thread, the patch info that Kilian provided takes some work to get it to work.
